East-West Seeds, the PPSA Vegetables Working Group Lead, in partnership with the PPSA Secretariat, organized the From Seeds to Vegetables: Where does it start? Seed Plant and Quality Assurance Tour last September 21 in San Rafael, Bulacan.
Ahon Sa Hirap, Inc. (ASHI), Sustansiya Philippines, Benguet Farmers’ Cooperative, Foodlink Advocacy Co-operative, and INFARMCO Group took part in the half-day activity which started with a trip in Farm Ready Seedling Nursery, a subsidiary of EWS Philippines, followed by the Seed Plant and Quality Assurance Tour inside the state-of-the-art facility of East-West Seed Company, Inc.
In the latter part of the tour, EWS representative, Mr Dexter Difuntorum, facilitated a group sharing session and discussion on how learning tours can be adopted as a regular activity of the VWG under its knowledge sharing initiatives.
“We always imagine farming as seed to plant to produce. But after the tour in EWS plant, we realized that it is more than that. It takes financial capacity, technology and human resources to deliver quality seeds,” said the representative of Sustansiya Philippines.
Through this initiative, participants were able to gain an understanding of how seeds are processed in the plant and undergo quality assurance testing and were able to interact with other value chain players.
